Gartner has been working on its magical quadrant for cloud services and platform infrastructure (CIPS) which is the evolution of IaaS. Below, the diagram shows the outline of the quadrants. The reason for the evolution is to showcase how customers use public cloud platforms and how clients utilize the research. The scope has also increased to include PaaS capabilities.
Gartner defines cloud infrastructure and platform services (CIPS) as:
“standardized, highly automated offerings, in which infrastructure resources (e.g., compute, networking and storage) are complemented by integrated platform services. These include managed application, database and functions as-a-service offerings. The resources are scalable and elastic in near-real time and are metered by use. Self-service interfaces are exposed directly to the customer, including a web-based user interface (UI) and an API. The resources may be single-tenant or multitenant, and can be hosted by a service provider or on-premises in the customer’s data centre”
Gartner recently released report places the 7 industry leaders who provide full cloud infrastructure on the matrix and bases the placement on their strengths and weaknesses. The 7 leading vendors are
Alibaba Cloud, Amazon Web Services, Google, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, and Tencent Cloud.
Over the years the top 3 leaders have not changed and have remained Amazon, Microsoft and Google. Amazon has continued to be the dominant leader of the pack in the leader quadrant and it has been noted that AWS provides over half of Amazons operating income. Microsoft has made leaps of progress in particular with supporting the open-source software community along with Google. Google has also been praised by Gartner for its data science and big data capabilities although they are not generating the same revenue quantities as Amazon.
The bottom left quadrant looks at the Niche players who are Alibaba Cloud, Oracle, IBM and Tencent Cloud who are not focused on dethroning the Top-Right competitors. However, they are more focused on dominating in their own speciality. For example, Alibaba is focused on the Chinese market but with plans to expand to the Asian market. Oracle is working on new PaaS capabilities, IBM is pushing its multi-cloud capabilities with acquisition of Red Hat and Tencent cloud is pursuing increased IaaS market share.
We will wait to see how the magical quadrant evolves and vendor positions change in the near future.fmatr
